Mike Riley is the new OSU football head coach. The Huskies are happy.
Matt for cookies, Ken for notes, Ray for turning off the lights (all too well), everyone else for showing up.
VO is working with the Oregon Spatial Data Center to organize links to spatial data both within and outside Oregon. Dawn Wright is writing proposals to get more funding for the project. Sharon reported on the catalog working group meeting. The Oasis system at the OSU Valley Library is constrained to a single category called 'map' in which to document both paper maps and digital spatial data. Oasis may be revised in the future to include additional categories useful for spatial data documentation. However, Oasis is unable to search for entries by location, not a useful constraint for spatial data. Theresa Valentine suggests the ArcIMS Metadata Explorer as a viable alternative, but the library is not likely to switch from Oasis. A group from the Forest Science Department has proposed a campus repository for spatial data funded by the OSU student technology resource fee. That proposal includes a College of Forestry or OSU position for a person to build and maintain a campus-wide spatial database.
Theresa demonstrated the Forest Science Data Bank Spatial Metadata Explorer, which uses the metadata server of ArcIMS. It is very cool. Check it out at http://www.cof.orst.edu/MetadataExplorer/explorer.jsp Metadata entries are added through Arc Catalog. There is a need to move existing metadata records from the Access database and from /data/fordata, but there are currently no personnel for doing that task.
We now have money for more plotter paper in the FSL, thanks to Dave Hood, Tom Spies, and Gordan Grant. Thanks, guys!
Terralyn has ordered a new server to replace Sequoia. She will soon order a new RAID to replace the optical jukebox. Because it will have a 1 terabyte capacity it will only be backed up monthly or quarterly. Thus, while it will include space available a scratch space, users are strongly cautioned against using it for workspace because it will not have frequent backups. Sharon asked if there will be room for a full set of digital orthophoto quads, and Matt commented that he has used DOQs compressed by MrSID software and found them satisfactory for his purposes.
Theresa needs images of the month. Send in yours now and get an award and fame! Kelly Christiansen volunteered his outstanding beer label image.
