Main Topic: What’s New in ArcGIS 9.3 from Theresa Valentine and Kelly Christiansen

Theresa and Kelly gave separate presentations about what they’ve come across in using ArcGIS 9.3 and reading through the ‘What’s New’ materials.

  • Theresa’s presentation links to What’s New documentation what's new in 9.3 9.3 Seminar Resources tables can be sorted on multiple fields new tools for managing bookmarks enhanced labeling control – more tightly integrated with Maplex opportunities for reverse geocoding HTML popups accessible using the HTML Popup tool Export to KML (from toolbox or with button available from City of Portland)
  • Kelly’s presentation ability to drag layer files directly into ArcMap add data from ArcMap Resource Center (File-> Add Data from Resource Center) – works well as reference flexibility on how to enter ‘go to XY’; once at a specific location, capabilities to add a point ability to clip rasters to selected graphics (although maybe not necessarily snapped to a particular window) legend maintains transparency identify tool has been enhanced; right click on returned records and access the attribute table or layer properties zonal histograms create scatterplot matrix (available at Tools-> Graphs -> Create Scatterplot Matrix)

    Introductions

Ron Beloin was introduced as a new Faculty Research Assistant working with Glenn Howe and Brad St. Clair on seed source mapping using ArcGIS Server. He and Terralyn have been working together to get a prototype online mapping tool up. As of now, it’s very fluid, but Ron hopes to present some further results at an upcoming meeting.

    Meetings:

  • February 3: Willamette Valley GIS User Group Meeting, in Albany 1:00 pm
  • FS/BLM Geospatial ’09 in Snowbird, Utah from April 27-May 1. Website
  • USGS Research in the Northwest – February in Portland

    Training:

  • Google earth (using/creating KML files)? . There was interest in this topic. Matt/Keith and Theresa to work on. Matt will talk next meeting, and people were interested in how to add google maps to websites (perhaps a seminar?)
  • Kelly Christiansen volunteered to lead an Illustrator training session in an upcoming month
  • NETMAP – Watershed analysis suite of tools. Currently only working with ArcGIS 9.2. Kelly knows the project fairly well and was impressed with its functionality. Theresa attended workshop in FSL demonstrating the tool’s use.
  • ArcGIS Image Server – There was still interest to have Terralyn set up a demonstration site to test the utility of Image Server. Potential datasets include the 10m DEMs currently on T:\gis

    Data:

    Round Table :

Theresa: looking for versioning software to be used with relational databases. It was generally advised that source control versioning software would not work well in a database context owing to the large number of transactions. She also reported on some frustrations with forcing stream networks with Lidar derived DEMs (streams drain down roads rather than across the road.

Kelly: received his 15-year pin from USFS, plans to take more time off

Matt: raised the possibility of a Forestry Computing Group-like staff for GIS and programming. Mostly it was thought that such a model would be relatively difficult to fund.

Dave H-W: travelling, including Chicago for Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me

Ron: gave a bit of his background, worked for a large EPA contractor in Georgia \

Terralyn: helping Ron, wants to know about disaster recovery for ArcGIS Server and will send a request to ESRI.

Patti: Lidar is coming soon for much of the Klamath basin, she is dealing with a glut of remote sensing data recently and wondering what to do with it all.
