Meetings:

  • Jan 31, 9-11:30 Orthoimagery Framework Implementation Meeting, Salem
  • February 4 (2:00-3:00 in Pvy 282) the Forestry Computing Committee will be considering a proposal to include all database hosting in the standard basic services fee. That is, the proposal is to eliminate database hosting fees starting July 2008. Guests are welcome to attend the Forestry Computing Committee meeting and you may want to be a part of this discussion
  • February 12: Willamette Valley GIS User Group Meeting, in Albany 1:00 pm
  • Geoprogramming group: Meeting date?/Topic Matt is going to try and arrange for something.

    Training:

  • Google earth (using/creating KML files)? . There was interest in this topic. Matt/Keith and Theresa to work on. Matt will talk next meeting, and people were interested in how to add google maps to websites (perhaps a seminar?)

    Data

  • Theresa checked with Oregon Department of Revenue, and they aren't able to release their taxlot data to us. (issues with counties)
  • Keith is interested in CA soils, let him know if you have any leads for him.

    Software

  • Starting to see some info coming out on 9.3
  • Ghostview (under OSU software, lets you look at .eps files and convert them to other formats.)
  • Keith has been working with Fragstats 3.3. Dave HW has been working with Crime Stats and Patch Analyst
  • Future Speakers/topics:

  • Kelly to do a talk on cartographic design
  • Marc Rempel from valley library : (Dave will talk to him) They just launched the wildlife explorer http://oregonexplorer.info/wildlife/ which has a neat Wildlife Viewer Marc worked on. He is also working on a measure 49 tool. He is using the latest and greatest online mapping technology so it would be interesting.

    Round Table

    Matt: colourlovers.com Check it out. also kulur.com (adobe site). He's also been doing lots of python.

    Kelly: Matt helped with Land cover data (wierd project in Albers Equal Area, National projection that GAP Program uses.

    Dave: Making maps, co-authored journal article. Working on kernal densities and Natural Breaks The USGS is still working on filling George's old job. Dave noted that he went to the Green Bay playoff game (very cold)

    Theresa: Lots of work on finishing up the LTER Andrews Grant. Trying to get Research Natural Area (RNA) coverage together before Sarah Greene retires. On a Forest Service National SDE team, and just took a class on digital photography.

    Bill: wanted ideas on ESRI help, folks recommend that he look at the forums on-line

    Keith: Went to a "R" workshop (stats package) open source, "all the Kids are doing it" Good graphs, joins, etc.. complicated yet flexable
