Spatial Data Management Group Meeting Notes January 19, 2006

Attendees:

Nate, George L., Kelly C., Dave HW., Matt G., John W., Terralyn V., Jerry M., Theresa V.

Treats: Dave Hockman-Wert (they were very yummy)

Notes: Theresa

Speaker: Nathan Truelove:

Examining of the flow and direction of water in determining steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Chinook salmon(O. tschawytscha) migration patterns within the Columbia River Estuary and plume by integrating biotelemetry and environmental observation and forecasting systems (EOFS). The underlying methodology included analysis of the spatial and temporal movements of juvenile outmigrant salmonids with hydrological data from the CORIE observation network .

Meeting:

ArcSDE meeting in Portland

Theresa attended a meeting of the ESRI NW ArcSED user group. It was very informative, especially on the use of layer files. Many of the organizations have created layer files to ease users. Theresa will post directions for these on the tips and trips page.

Andrews Symposium w Poster Session February 8th, MU

Poster session will be after lunch.

Python Group

Will be meeting Wednseday January 25th at 10:00 in Peavy 240

Geoporocessing/Scripting User Group Meeting February 22, Clackamas, OR

This group is just forming and interested in cooperating with our Python group. Theresa will attend this meeting.

Training:

System Architecture training, December 15 and 16 – Terralyn and Sean attending

Terralyn said the training was good, didn't give her answers on when to use IMS and when to use GIS Server, but Sean and her figured out that the sizing of our systems here are more than capable and they can handle a lot more traffic. They also learned about using SDE direct connects, which does more proccessing locally (instead of on the server) and they will be doing some experimenting with this. Terralyn also heard that at 9.3, ArcIMS and GIS Server will be closer together (perhaps a gui for GIS Server)

FSL Plotters: Theresa

Training went well. Both plotter rooms now have white boards where you can write that you are working with the plotters, to help with conflicts. Theresa will post her powerpoint presentation on the website.

ESRI Seminars:

Several live training seminars have been announced by ESRI. You can try and attend them from your computer live, or watch them from the archives. (live training seminars)Upcoming is Understanding Spatial Statistics in ArcGIS 9 on Thursday January 26th at several times. Matt has looked at most of Making Better Map Layouts with ArcGIS and found it very useful.

Version 9.1 Upgrade: Message was sent out to users. Service pack 1 is on Q:\resource\arc9\patches

Fordata workspace discussion:

Need to survey users to see if there are any Unix users of /data/fordata. Terralyn would like to move the data to the PC side as we're running out of space on the current computer. (Theresa to send out message to fordata list server).
Theresa is in the process of cleaning up /data/fordata, creating image libraries for the DRG's, and creating a webpage that will explain how the data is organized and has some high-level metadata. The drg image catalogs for Oregon are in T:\GIS\oregon\drg\drg_catalogs.mdb or24drg2 is the 1:24k DRG catalog for Oregon (Currently has all the clipped images. There are more that need to be completed. Users will go into ArcMap and then add this catalog into their data frame for use as a backdrop.
There was a discussion on other backdrops to 'add' to your ArcMap session, including USGS Seamless Website where you can add their GIS Server to ArcCatalog/ArcMap (under GIS Servers, Add ArcIMS Server and type in the address: http://seamless.usgs.gov and you can select what services you want to add.
We also discussed how to store data so COF users can use the data, and it doesn't become an updating nightmare for the person trying to update the data. The ideal solution would be to publish a map service in ArcIMS or ArcGIS Server, and then folks would then connect to this server. It might be difficult to track usage, but you should be able to track hits to the web address. Setting up a file of layer files under the /data/fordata structure would allow you to to point to your data (with read-only), but keep the source in another location.
Theresa wants to do a test with the Forest Service Regional Office on getting some of their SDE raster DOQs. If this works, it could save us time putting the data into SDE. Theresa will check with the Forest Service to see if 2005 DOQ's have been delivered, and if OSU is going to be serving them up.

Round Table

George: Preparing summary data for Gary Larson on lakes in Mount Rainier National Park
Dave: preparing metadata (*** three stars for Dave), and working on landscape analysis with Applegate Fire Monitoring
John: attended John Sherrard session on GPS Analysis Extention
Jerry: noted that Forest Engineering has the GPS Extention and it only works with Trimble receivers

Next meeting:

February 16, room 313 in Richardson (assuming available) at 10AM.

treats: Jerry

notetaker: Keith?
