GIS/RS Monthly Meeting Notes

*Introductions, new person-Michael Guzy

*Note Takers-Sharon volunteered for this month and Ken was volunteered for next month (Not a popular job)

*Sharon will now send out meeting announcements to the forgis mailing list.  Notes will also be sent to the list and also added to web page.

*Sharon passed around photos that Dawn had sent over from GIS Day

FSRN Spatial Database

*Incentives for populating FSRN spatial database

            -Parking spot of the month

-Don’t have to take notes or bring cookies

            -Monthly award, unique gift

For next month Theresa was going to think about a unique gift and we were going to try and actually get some entries onto the database.

*Karin inquired about web status of the database.  No one knew for sure.  Will ask Doug Oetter? [His reply: One of our grad students is helping Tom M. & I put our (LARSE) database on an NT server and accessing it through SQL Server using Active Server Pages which are HTML scripts.  Once that process is worked out, I figured it would be easy enough to do the same thing for the Spatial db.  It's one of those things that is on my list and I would get to it, but if someone else came along...  The result is a web form that can be designed however you want, with pull down lists and buttons, whatever.  I'm not sure how the query works, but he tells me that we could generate a report pretty easily that would be the full data and/or FGDC metadata.  It looks promising, and I don't think it would duplicate Don & Gody's work.  Also there can be password protection (and hence record keeping) for editing.

New Data Layers

*Karin said that a draft version of the Interagency Vegetation Mapping Project Veg layer was available for western Oregon.  She’ll add record to FSRN database

*Theresa has a new roadless area coverage for the U.S. reflecting the recent changes made in designation.  She’ll put it in /data/fordata/usa.  There is also one for Alaska in /data/fordata/Alaska.  It has metadata and she’ll add record to the FSRN Database.  It’s in geographic.

*Pablo was looking into the cost and acquisition of the new PRISM climate data.

World Construction Set

*Theresa is going to place an order for World Construction Set Software as soon as she gets all the mgmt codes (OSU).  She has 10 people so the cost will be $400 per person, plus shipping.  This isn’t a yearly fee, although when new versions come out, we’ll have to purchase these additionally.  Changes usually occur every couple of years.  She has one extra copy.  To order additional copies in the future will cost $400. Jeff Neighbert is starting a user’s group that we may want to join once we have the software in hand.

ArcGIS

*Workshop report and future topics.

*Theresa sent some questions to the ESRI list server concerning migration to geodatabases.  Has gotten some responses and will send to group.

*Mike Guzy is going to investigate Unix boxes connecting to SQL server

*Mike also suggested a good book by C.J. Date-Introduction to Relational Databases

*Talked about getting ESRI folk down to help us figure out what we need to do.  Thought was that we should be better prepared about what our specific needs are, before we asked them to come.

*Geo volunteered lead an Information Needs Analysis to address this issue.  This subgroup will meet 1/17 @10:00 (meet in his office).  Theresa, Matt, Michael, and Sharon will attend.  Bring ides of how we use system (size of data layers, applications and queries, multiple users needs, permissions).  Jonathan will give Sharon an example of a complex application for the meeting.

*Theresa and Dylan (Mike agreed to help) are working on testing SDE, ArcGIS and SQL Server on NT.

*Terralyn is going to install SDE on Unix.

*Mike asked if there were any plans to migrate Imagine to NT.  No one knew of any, although Imagine has ties to ESRI.

COURSES

*Terralyn checked into Intro to ArcSDE classes.  Cost would be $6850 (not discounted for education) for 12 people for them to do an on-site 2-day course.  The course costs $900 plus travel for an individual to take off-site.  Prerequisite is knowledge of GIS and RDMS.  [Note I did not see any Virtual Campus SDE classes offered]

*Terralyn looked into some SQL Server training-Titles: Administering Microsoft SQL Server 7.0; Designing and Implementing Databases with Microsoft SQL Server 7.0.  Each series is 4 videos and costs $287.50.  These are from Edulearn (www.edulearn.com)

*Mark Klopsch said he found out that we had 5 days of Imagine training credits if anyone wanted to take advantage of them.

*Paula talked about her GIS distant ed course-targeted for natural resource managers that want an overview of GIS and students to see if they might be interested in more in-depth training.  The course is available for us to look at www.instruct.orst.edu.  It’s FW303.  We have to enroll in blackboard and the course, but we won’t be charged for the class.   She would appreciate comments.  She also acknowledged the contributions she got from the group.

*Theresa talked about the GeoNetwork Challenge to publish their ArcIMS application on the Internet.  Details are found in the winter edition of ArcNews.  Could get points towards ESRI courses or user conferences.

NEXT MEETING-THURSDAY, FEB 22. at 10 in the west conference room, Terralyn will bring cookies and Jonathan volunteered to bring cookies for the meeting after that.
