Publishing MetaData in the Forest Science Data Bank Spatial Data Metadata Server

From ArcCatalog:

Set the metadata editor to ISO metadata wizard:

  1. Click on the metadata tab
  2. pull down tools, options and select the ISO metadata wizard at the bottom of the form
  3. close

Edit the metadata:

  1. Select the edit metadata button
  2. Select next until you reach "DataSet Identification Theme or Categories" You must select one of these themes. Select the one that best fits your data. See Theresa for a handout that has more detail about each category. The Categories are:
    1. Administrative and political boundaries
    2. Agriculture and farming
    3. Atmosphere, climatology, and meteorology
    4. Biologic and ecologic
    5. Business and economic
    6. Cadastral and land planning
    7. Cultural, society, and demographics
    8. Elevation and derived products
    9. Environment and conservation
    10. Facilities and structures
    11. Geological and geophysical
    12. Human health and disease
    13. Imagery, base maps, and land cover
    14. Inland water resources
    15. Locations and geodetic networks
    16. Military and intelligence
    17. Oceans and estuaries
    18. Transportation networks
    19. Utility and communication networks
  3. Select Finish

Set the metadata editor to FGDC

  1. Click on the metadata tab
  2. pull down tools, options and select the FGDC metadata editor at the bottom of the form
  3. close

Edit the metadata:

  1. Select the edit metadata button
  2. Select the citation tab
  3. Select the Details tab
  4. Under Series/Publication Information
  5. Type "Corvallis, OR" for publication place and type "Forest Science Data Bank" for publisher
  6. Check to make sure the on-line linkage is correct (under general tab, put in correct link for "on-line linkage")
  7. Save
  8. Exit from the editor. You are now ready to try publishing

Publishing

  1. Copy the coverage/shapefile/dataset: Right click on mouse and copy
  2. Scroll down to Internet Servers:
  3. Add Internet Server
    1. URL: http://www.cof.orst.edu
    2. Click on Get List
    3. Select metasde
    4. Select show secure services and put publish in as login and publish in as password (you might want to change this name to Publish Metadata)
  4. Double click on metasde (look for the pencil)
  5. Look at directory structure and select the appropriate directory.
  6. Highlight the directory where you want to put data and do right-click on mouse paste
  7. If you don't see the directory you want, ask Theresa to make one for you
  8. If you paste in the wrong directory, just drop and drag your record to the correct place.
  9. If you get an error message, then try and interpret, or ask Theresa for help.

Go look at your data:

  1. From a web browser, go to the following link: www.cof.orst.edu/MetadataExplorer
  2. Do a search or browse for data.

Updating your metadata

  1. If you update your metadata, just copy the revised information (copy the dataset) and paste into the metadata service. It will over-write your data.
