Information provided by William B. Krohn
"To test our predicted vertebrate occurrences, we used the check-lists from
NWRs as one of our main data sets. This procedure is recom-
mended in the GAP Handbook and fairly widely used on gap projects (e.g.,
Idaho, see Scott et al. 1993). The basic idea is that because GAP is trying
to predict what is present over a ten-year period, and check lists from
state or federal wildlife management areas are generally based on long-term
field inventories, they make reasonable test data (true to a degree, but
you might want to look at: Ecological Applications, 9(3): 835-848[1999]).
Anyway, the bottomline is using gap data to prepare check lists for NWR in
Maine would be, at best, circular.
1. A list of products are available on the ME-GAP web site. Look under
"Reports."
2. & 3. Habitat relations models, along with all the GIS coverages and
other ME-GAP data, are available on CDs. ME-GAP CDs can be purchased from
the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's (MDIFW) Online
Store at:
http://www.informe.org/cgi-bin/ifw/merc/showcart.cgi?template_file=cd_gap.html
4. Have worked with the MDIFW to develop a landscape analysis method for
southern Maine. Final contract report done, manuscript being prepared for
possible publication.
Finally, Stephanie L. Orndorff, one of my M.S. students, is finishing her
M.S. thesis in which she documents her work on representational analyses of
Maine's conservation lands. She used the ME-GAP and other GIS data to
answer the general question: How representative are Maine's conservation
lands of the natural variability occurring in the state ? Of particular
interest to the refuge folks in Maine would be here last chapter that
answered this question in terms of state WMAs and federal NWRs. Because
both state and federal wildlife areas were originally purchased with
primarily game species in mind (especially migratory
waterfowl), these lands would not be expected to completely provide
habitats for all vertebrate species. While we found this to be the case for
NWRs (in Maine, they cover mostly wetlands and under-represent upland
habitats), state WMAs fairly represent
habitats used by the full range of vertebrates that regularly breed in
Maine"

Land cover:
During 2000 the land cover mapping was completed for Maryland, Delaware,
and New Jersey. Accuracy assessment has been initiated, starting with
Delaware, and the gap analysis of the mapped classes has begun. Completion
of metadata and preparation of data for delivery to the national office are
underway. We plan to complete these activities by 31 March 2001.
Attempts to install the necessary hardware to import our video into a GIS
format have been problematic and have been put on hold until the rest of
the gap project is completed. If successful, this will enable additional
video to be used in the classification process where GPS capture was
intermittent during video flights (e.g. over the mountains in western
Maryland.)
Animal modeling:
Wildlife habitat modeling work in 2000 included identification of landscape
metrics (e.g., percentage of forest cover within 250 m of breeding ponds)
for amphibian modeling and development of GIS approaches to incorporating
those metrics into the modeling. Landscape metrics have also been
identified for grassland birds, and GIS approaches to including metrics in
models for area-sensitive, forest-dependent birds were fine-tuned.
The modeling software has been updated to allow for three different
approaches to mapping distributional limits (i.e., range within project
area). There are two hexagon-based approaches for common species, one of
which relies on the existing species-hexagon association database, and the
other allowing for additional hexagons to be added (e.g., for a species
which an expert reviewer indicates is more wide-spread than reflected in
the existing range map). The third approach, for extremely rare or
endangered species, relies on a species-quad (USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle)
association database. A controlling table determines which approach is
used for a particular species.
With the completion of the land cover, the process of cross-walking the
land cover classes to habitats (i.e., the habitats listed in the
species-habitat association tables) was initiated. The first set of draft
models and distribution maps will be sent to expert reviewers shortly.
.
Land Stewardship Mapping:
During 2000 the stewardship layer for the project was completed. Quality
control checks, and last minute changes are nearly complete.
Analysis:
GAP investigators expect to complete analysis of the protection and
management status of biodiversity by 31 March 2001. The determination the
statistics for the land cover classes has been completed, and further
assessment is underway. In 2001 the analysis for the vertebrate modelling
will initiate.
Reporting and Data Distribution:
The final report writing for Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey has begun
and should be completed by 31 March 2001. The GIS layers for will be
distributed in ARC/INFO/ArcView format, with associated data tables in
Microsoft Access format and dBase format on CD-ROM. The status and
availability of these products will be reported via the GAP Web page.
Other Accomplishments and Innovations:
The MID-A GAP data have been distributed to several partners including the
New Jersey Natural Heritage Program and the Maryland Chapter of The Nature
Conservancy. TNC is using the data to aid in their ecoregional planning of
the Chesapeake Lowlands Ecoregion in Maryland and Delaware. Staff in the
Maryland Department of Natural Resources have been using the data for such
purposes and identifying viable plant and animal corridors for connecting
other habitats, and targeting forest land parcels for conservation instead
of, or in addition to, timber management."

"West Virginia Gap is now nearing completion, there are two CDs which
should contain all of the data that we submitted to the National Gap GIS
coordinator last November. The Gap coordinator (Ree Brannon) has already
reviewed
our files, and the only likely updates to our data in the near future will
be some minor edits to our metadata.
These are the things included on the CDs
- Models of predicted distribution for all native mammals, herps, birds,
and butterflies in WV (in ARC/INFO grid format)
- Maps of known range (on hexagon grid) for these animals (ARC/INFO
coverage format)
- Tables listing species predicted by WV-GAP to occur in WV's NWR areas
(Ohio River Islands and Canaan Valley) (dbf format)
- WV-GAP Microsoft Access wildlife habitat relationship databases (and
simplified dbase tables of the same info)"
