3-D Visualization and Simulated Flyover of Mt. Hood

RealPlayer required to view clip or Windows Media Player

Created by Dave Hockman-Wert, USGS Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center (FRESC) This video clip, created for OSU’s GIS Day Open House by Dave Hockman-Wert, USGS Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center (FRESC), shows the landscape around Mt. Hood National Forest. The base layer is clipped from a historical (“presettlement”) vegetation layer of Oregon created by Claudine Tobalske of the Oregon Natural Heritage Program. Streams (100K) are represented by blue lines, major roads are represented by red lines, and the National Forest boundary is represented by maroon lines. Using ArcScene (ArcGIS), these layers were overlaid on a 30-m digital elevation model (DEM) that had been simplified to a pixel size of 150 meters, giving the terrain its three-dimensional appearance. The video clip of a simulated flyover was made in ArcScene using MapAnimator 3D. This software program allows for relatively easy creation and editing of a video “flight path.”
