Online Linkage: http://www.fsl.orst.edu/pnwerc/river/ Description Abstract: This map was created to delineate the extent of the active channel and other floodplain features for the Willamette River, Oregon, for the year 1850. The extent of the active channel and features such as alcoves, secondary channels, and islands were based on The Nature Conservancy's estimated natural vegetation of Willamette Valley (1851) land cover digital data. Water bodies (river and floodplain) were captured from the vegetation coverage and interpreted for channel type. Purpose: This polygon coverage will be used by land managers and government entities within the Willamette Basin to assess past changes and possible future management impacts on the river. It will also be used as part of a research project designed to formulate future scenarios for growth in the Willamette Valley (Pacific Northwest Ecosystem Research Consortium, OSU, UO, EPA). Supplemental_Information: Procedures_Used: This data layer originated with The Nature Conservancy's "Provisional Classification of 'Presettlement' Vegetation in Oregon, as Recorded by General Land Office Surveyors" (c. 1851), a digital ARC/Info vector coverage which we called VEG1851_V3. All the polygons labelled as water, within an areal extent determined by the related data layer REACHES, were reselected to form a coverage of the river and floodplain features. The related data file SLICES was used to determine the known extent of floodplain, for the differentiation between within floodplain and outside floodplain features. Each water polygon was then attributed for channel code, as well as reach, route, corner, and landmark (where appropriate). This process was accomplished using Imagine8.3 Vector Module. Subsequent editing and clean-up was done in ARC/Info and Imagine. Active channel is defined as the portion of the river and floodplain innundated at normal winter flood flows (i.e., those with an average return interval of one to two years). The extent of this area was determined primarily from vegetation type and presence. Supplemental_Information: Revisions: This is the first version released outside the work group. No further revisions are planned.
