The potential role of hardwoods in reducing fire damage
One explanation for the observed lower mortality in Control stands is that the hardwoods (removed in thinned stands) may have reduced fire damage to Douglas-fir trees.
Fire damage to Douglas-fir trees is positively related to the presence of hardwoods such as tan oak and madrone.
