Description
Abstract:
This ARC GRID is a stand replacement disturbance map of the
1988 WOV area, which is western Oregon from the Pacific Ocean
to near the Cascade crest. This image portrays stand replacement
level disturbance sites (minimum 2 ha) for the forested portion
of the study area. Disturbances are classified according to cause
and date.
Purpose:
To provide a highly accurate, high spatial resolution
disturbance map of western Oregon for use in forest & wildlife
management and regional ecology studies.

Procedures_Used:
Over fifty separate LANDSAT images dating from 1972-1995 were
combined and analyzed to detect forest cover change during five
time periods. The analysis took place on 28 different pieces,
assembled so that each piece had only one image for each date.
After change pixels were identified for each piece, the pieces
were mosaiced, smoothed, and filtered to a minimum mapping unit
of 2 ha. Disturbance by fire was separated from disturbance by
harvest by visual inspection and expert knowledge.

revision of an earlier version which was released limitedly, and
covered the time period 1972-1991. This is the first public
version and is the current official version.
