Klamath Mountains
(Southwest Oregon)

The Klamath Province in southwest Oregon differs from the Cascade and Coast Range Provinces in forest structure and species composition. These southwestern forests are composed of mixed conifer and mixed conifer/hardwood forests. They are highly fragmented by natural factors (poor soils, dry climate, wildfires) and timber harvest. Because of past timber management practices and fire exclusion, large old-growth trees are common throughout a matrix of young forests. Land ownerships include a mixture of Forest Service, BLM, private and state lands.

The following CFER research, organized by project, is located in the Southwest Oregon.

Projects: Structure and Large Wood

Structure Project:
The Ecology of Rare Plants
Old-Growth Stand Development
Thinning to Increase Vigor of Old-Growth Trees
Response of Small Mammals to Fuels Management
Response of Birds to Fire Mosaics
Fire Severity and Post-fire Vegetation Recovery in Riparian Areas of the Biscuit Fire in Southwestern Oregon

Large Woody Debris Project:
Large Woody Debris Production and Input
Environmental Controls on Woody Plant Diversity in Western Oregon Riparian Forests
