The Western Oregon
Cascades Province is almost entirely forested and the flora
and fauna are similar to those of the Coast Range. The region
is dominated by Douglas-fir and western hemlock forests at low-to-mid
elevations and silver fir and mountain hemlock forests at higher
elevations. At the southern end, mixed conifer forests of Douglas-fir,
grand fir, and incense cedar largely replace the Douglas-fir
and western hemlock forests. Land ownership in this region includes
a mixture of private, state and federal lands. Private and state
lands within this area are mostly cutover, whereas Forest Service
and BLM lands still include significant areas of older forest.
However, almost 95% of federal lands are at elevations greater
than 2000 feet.
The following CFER research, organized by project, is located
in the Western Cascades.
