The Northwest Forest Plan and state forest management plans provide approaches
for regional-scale management of forest ecosystems that attempt to accommodate
human resource needs, sustain critical ecosystem functions, and maintain
native biodiversity. Additional research is needed to assess the efficacy
of the management approaches and to refine specific management directions.
Information needs of resource managers are inherently complex
and integrative, and many of the issues extend over many years
and a broad geographic area. Accordingly, CFER has initiated
four research projects
that will answer questions at different scales of time and
space. These projects are conducted in locations
throughout western Oregon and focus on a variety of topics.
