| Oregon's 28 million acres of forestland can be divided into three categories of ownership: private (both industrial and family owned); state and other public owners (tribes, counties, and cities); and federal (U.S. Forest Service, BLM, National Park Service or U.S. Fish and Wildlife) ownership. Each category of land is managed under somewhat different rules due to differences in management objectives: the focus of most private forest landowners is the growing and harvesting of trees; federal lands continue to shift toward providing non-timber values; and state lands are largely managed to balance economic, social, and environmental benefits.
