Science and research play a major role in
the management of forestlands, and can provide information
at many stages during planning and implementation. Ecosystem
management, with its focus on sustaining ecological processes
and managing across large landscapes, builds on a sound scientific
foundation. To implement ecosystem
management, forest managers rely on the best available
science to guide management decisions and to adapt practices
as new information comes to light.
Oregon's forests cover approximately 46 percent
of the state's total land base, and range among federal, state,
and private ownership. Consequently,
there are a variety of management plans
and implementation guidelines that steer the management of
forests in Oregon. Although these forests are managed to meet
different objectives, a common feature is that science will
continue to play a significant role in the sound management
of these resources.
