Cooperative Forest Ecosystem Research
CFER Background

The Cooperative Forest Ecosystem Research (CFER) program continues to develop and achieve its stated goals. Events that have shaped the program thus far include:

1995

Initial cooperative agreement signed with OSU, USGS FRESC, BLM

1996

Scoping meetings held with BLM to determine information needs

1997

CFER Problem Analysis completed
Three areas of information needs identified:
Ecology and management of young forest stands
    Riparian systems
    Species of special concern
  Initial CFER Research Team established

1998

ODF became additional cooperator

Pilot studies and preliminary field work started

1999

Research direction modified
Three integrated research themes developed:
Biotic responses to changes in stand structure
Production and function of large wood in the riparian zone
Effects of landscape pattern and composition on species
Integrated projects and field work underway

2000

Continued research on the three integrated research themes

Meetings with focus group and district contacts on future research directions

2001

Completion of several studies within the three integrated research themes

Development of a new research theme

First issues of the program's quarterly newsletter, CFER News, distributed

2002

Four issues of the quarterly newsletter, CFER News, were produced

The semi-technical report titled "Managing for Biodiversity in Young Douglas-fir Forests of Western Oregon" was published

Workshop held to convey results of the Tillamook Thinning Project

2003

The scope of the CFER research and information exchange program was expanded to include the BLM Density Management Study

A collaborative landscape-modeling project was initiated to evaluate alternative forest management scenarios

A 5-year review of the CFER program's research and information exchange activities was conducted

2004

Density Management Study Workshop and Field Tour organized and hosted

Final report completed for the Landscape Scenario Analysis Project

2005

Workshops conducted with BLM and ODF cooperators to identify research needs and priorities to help guide development of CFER's new Strategic Plan

New aquatic ecologist, Jason Dunham, joined the CFER research team

2006

Five students completed their research projects and successfully defended their theses, bringing the total number of graduate students to have come out of CFER to 24.

Archived Spotlight on Science presentations are now available on the CFER website here.

2007

CFER program begins transition, due to budget cuts from the USGS budget.

In November, CFER held a workshop discussing the contributions of CFER within a broader scientific context. View slides from the presentation here.
