Study Site Locations

The Young Stand Study takes place in the Willamette National Forest in western Oregon. The forest itself is 1.7 million acres (approx. the size of Delaware), situated mainly on the west slope of the Cascade Mountain Range. Until recently the Willamette National Forest was the largest timber producer in the nation. There are over 60,000 acres of second growth forests 30-50 years old within the forest, with another 100,000 acres less than ten years younger(USDA Forest Service 1990, p. IV-43).

Study plots are located on the Blue River, McKenzie, and Middle Fork Ranger Districts and are within 45 miles of the Blue River Ranger Station in Blue River, OR, the headquarters of the Cascade Center for Ecosystem Management.
